Dear Dr. Vinny,

I want to challenge my bar friends to a trick. Will the punt of an average wine bottle hold a 1-ounce shot?

—Garth, Mound, Minn.

Dear Garth,

Well I’ll be darned. I can’t believe you made me do this, but I just stood over my kitchen sink with a handful of wine bottles and my measuring shot glass. Yes, it appears that an ounce of liquid will fill the indention of the bottom of most wine bottles, known as the punt.

This is by no means a comprehensive study, and I couldn’t find any manufacturing specs that explained this phenomenon. I should also warn you that there are plenty of bottles out there without a punt, and some with obscenely deep ones. But it appears that’s a solid bet to make at a bar. Good luck, and share your winnings with your favorite wine advice columnist!
